O Mio Babbino Caro – O My Dear Papa

This is my favourite opera piece among all that I listen, the lyric was simple but, together with the melody, you can feel the sorrow inside. I can’t remember when was the first time I listen to this song, I guess when I was a kid then. Although I can’t understand Italian, like I mention before, I can feel the sadness, the sorrow of the singer. It just touch my soul, and it also mark the moment I fell in love with opera. There are few times when I listen to this song late at night, my tears flow down without I notice it.

Below I got 3 different artists sing the song, which do you guys think the best?

This opera in nutshell,
O mio babbino caro (Oh my dear papa) is an aria from the opera Gianni Schicchi (1918) by Giacomo Puccini (music) and Giovacchino Forzano (Libretto). It is sung by Lauretta after tensions between Schicchi and his prospective in-laws have reached a breaking point that threatens to separate her from Rinuccio, the boy she loves.

Italian

O mio babbino caro
Mi piace è bello, bello
Vo' andare in Porta Rossa
a comperar l'anello!
Sì, sì, ci voglio andare!
e se l'amassi indarno,
andrei sul Ponte Vecchio,
ma per buttarmi in Arno!
Mi struggo e mi tormento!
O Dio, vorrei morir!
Babbo, pietà, pietà!
Babbo, pietà, pietà!

Translation in English

O my dear papa
I like him, he is handsome, handsome
I want to go to Porta Rossa
to buy the ring!
Yes, yes, I want to go there!
And if my love were in vain,
I would go to the Ponte Vecchio
and throw myself in the Arno!
I am aching, I am tortured!
Oh God, I'd like to die!
Father, have pity, have pity!
Father, have pity, have pity!

By Hayley Westenra

By Montserrat Caballe

By Sarah Brightman

Just a comment on the three sopranos you featured singing this aria. Hayley Westerna is still young and raw in her voice though she has that high light bird-like voice but it is not matured yet and lack that operatic quality that Montserrat Caballe has.

Among these three, Caballe has the most expressive singing . Sarah Brightman has the range but her singing style is not operatic, it sounds more like pop-classical. If I were to choose, I would say Montserrat Caballe sings the best here.

Have you hear Maria Callas or Sumi Jo's version? Don't listen to the youtube version of Maria Callas because those are when she lost her voice. If you can find the recording in CD form, you should take a listen. Sumi Jo is not clear in her words and it sounded a bit too thick.
